Questions About Install Home Theater Speakers

Chris asks…
Home theatre speakers in car?
Hi there!
I want to know if it’s possible to install my home theatre speakers in my car, the speakers are small Sony satellite speakers, and the sub woofer is a medium sized Sony sub woofer, about 300W RMS.
Is it possible? Thanks in advance!

Jack answers:
Of course you can a car deck will take 4-8 ohms @ 10-25 watts a channel so if you put 300 watt speakers in a car they will be only getting what your deck puts out like 15 watts. Home speakers are the same thing as cars speakers they will probably sound better because they are in a box. You are an idiot if you think it will drain your battery only sub-woofers will do that (or if you have a crappy alternator)
i have put home speakers in a car and they sounded amazing better then my car speakers but don’t go below 4 ohms or above 8 ohms or you will kill your deck

What can you tell me about a chirping noise from my home theater speakers?
I recently installed a powered subwoofer and slightly rearranged my configuration to accomodate it. I am now hearing an occasional chirping noise from my other speakers. I haven’t been able to pinpoint it to one speaker, and I think it intermittantly occurs on different speakers. I have a mid-level Onkyo receiver and seem to only notice the chirp while watching TV, which has audio hooked up with RCA cables. Do you have any thoughts as to the cause?

Jack answers:
I think when you rearranged your system, something happened. This is what I would do. You will have to basically start over. Disconnect everything all cables remove them take them all out of your system. Each rca cable and with you speaker cables you need to check to see if somewhere they are shorting out intermittantly. Maybe an cable insulator got pinced or climped.
I would do this when you have some time set aside. I think you may more of a chance solving this problem by starting over than narrowing down the cause.

How do I install my TR-2810 speakers?
I got this Home theater speakers and i want to install them to My PC (windows vista) Is it possible? If it is what else do I need to do it and how?

Jack answers:
I think you need a home theater receiver and your computer needs to have an audio output of some sort (optical, coax, etc…)

5.1 Home Theater / How do I add more speakers?
I am installing a 5.1 home theater. How do I run my two Outside Speakers off of the Receiver without tying into the 5.1 speaker connections? Do I need a volume Control outside or something?

Jack answers:
If you have a 5.1 system and the receiver only has the six pair of connectors there is still hope. If you want to listen to something different in another area while watching a movie in the main area, you are out of luck.
However, if you are wanting that “whole house audio” experience then you need impedence matching gear. You can get volume control knobs with this built in or you can get a black box speaker selector instead. You hook speaker wire from the reciever to the choice from above and you have music in multiple locations. Without the impedence matching electronics you will kill your amp; some faster than others.
Before you do this, you have to be careful that the amp can handle the extra pull. Rule of thumb is you need 15-20 watts per channel for each pair of speakers you are trying to drive plus an additional 20 for safety.

Sandy asks…
Where is the best place to get a good deal on small home theater products and install, non-chain or chain?
I’d like to get a small home theater set up. I’m thinking a receiver, amplifier, blueray player, some in wall or in ceiling speakers and a 50-55″ flat screen TV, at minimum. I’ve been to local home theater specialty stores and to a Best Buy recently. It’s hard to figure out which way is the best to go. On the surface it seems like the local places are a bit ore expensive, but maybe they have better customer service? Does anyone out there have any experience with a “Magnolia” theater set up and install from Best Buy?

Jack answers:
Budget is the ultimate factor to decide.
Generally specialty shops have better speaker selections and better trial periods. Be sure to ask if you can audition different brands to see what works best for your space.
For a small home theater you may actually consider a projector option.
A TV isn’t in any theater i’ve seen.
